SWEPA has embarked the first International Barefoot Solar Project in Kg Sonsogon Magandai and Kg Sg Magandai, Kota Marudu. This will be the first ever community project in Malaysia where 4 selected illiterate grandmothers will be sent to India for 6 months to learn how to become a Solar Engineer. Unbelievable right?
Founder of Barefoot College, Bunker Roy has a proven system where 1200 grandmothers in 64 countries has undergone the course in Barefoot College and all of them graduated after 6 months and went back to to solar electrified their own village. Kg Sonsogon Magandai and Kg Sg Magandai will be our first model village to this Solar project! Bravo to all the selected grandmothers! You will be the change agent of women empowerment! !
All this is made possible with the joint effort of a few local partners namely the Asian Forestry Company, PACOS, Raleigh International, and with financial assistance from Sabah Credit Corporation and the GEF SGP Grant.
Special thanks and appreciation to the District Officer (DO) of Kota Marudu, Ketua Kampongs and the Ministry of Community Development & Consumer Affairs.
